Septoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct the shape of the septum, the partition between the two nasal cavities, in order to improve breathing.
In adults, the septum is composed of cartilage and bone and septal deviations can be either congenital (present from birth) or may develop as a result of an injury. Septoplasty is often the recommended procedure for patients who have difficulty breathing and show no improvement through the use of medication.
A thorough assessment is performed prior to surgery in order to correctly diagnose and treat all underlying causes of nasal obstruction. Many times, septoplasty is done in conjunction with a cosmetic rhinoplasty. This allows Dr. Boyd to improve the aesthetic shape of the nose while correcting the deviated septum.
The septoplasty operation is an outpatient procedure that is performed in the BOYD surgical center under general anesthesia. Our patients are typically able to go home following the procedure. Recovery from septoplasty surgery is one to two weeks for all normal activities.
